We are not alone
Once the horrors of Covid 19 fade, unless urgent action is taken at least 40,000 people will continue to die every year and hundreds of thousands suffer serious ill health and increased vulnerability to the next pandemic.
There is a large and increasing groundswell of people across the country who are shocked at the illegal levels of pollution and the health issues, and are campaigning for urgent action. Here are few.
British Heart Foundation: “Air pollution could cause more than 7,000 deaths in Suffolk and Essex this decade - that is the warning from the British Heart Foundation, which calls the situation a “public health emergency”.
British Lung Foundation: Campaigning to change laws, raise awareness, and make sure lung health is a priority across the UK.Mums for Lungs: “Air pollution is a public health crisis and our elected representatives are not doing enough to tackle it. We are campaigning for clean air for everyone — particularly children and babies. And we want this to happen as soon as possible.”
Client Earth: “A law is just words on a page unless it is enforced. The weak enforcement of law is one of the greatest barriers to protecting the earth and its inhabitants. With over a decade of experience, we know how to use the legal system as a lever of change, how to enforce it and how to win. We have proven that we will not shy away from challenging governments and businesses in court.”
Friends of the Earth: “Clean air - we all want to know our air is healthy. But too many of us breathe dirty air every day, especially in our towns and cities. Air pollution is a hidden killer and it hits children, older people and the poorest hardest.”
Healthy Air: “Air pollution in the UK harms our health and causes tens of thousands of premature deaths every year. We are calling for urgent action on air pollution.”
